Mong Phu gate and communal house

The old gate of Mong Phu, the heart of Duong Lam, still opens onto the square where the village met. Inside the communal house, rows of great wooden columns hold up a tiled roof carved with dragons and clouds, and your guide explains who was worshipped here and how the village ran its own affairs. Beside it is the old well the families drew water from for generations.
The laterite lanes and a 400-year-old house

The lanes branch off the main road like the bones of a fish, walled in rough rust-brown laterite laid without plaster. You step inside a wooden house close to four hundred years old where the family still lives; they sit you down for green tea and show you the ancestral altar. The old houses of Duong Lam are family homes, not museums. If a family is out on the day, your guide takes you into another house of the same age instead.

Che lam is the village sweet: toasted sticky rice flour, molasses, ginger and peanuts, pressed and cut while still warm. A family that still makes it shows you each step and lets you press your own. You are welcome to buy a packet and just as welcome not to.
Mia Pagoda

Sung Nghiem Pagoda, known to everyone as Mia Pagoda, holds close to three hundred lacquered statues, one of the largest collections in northern Vietnam. Your guide picks out the few worth knowing by name, so the hall becomes more than a crowd of faces.
The shrines of the two kings

Duong Lam is called the land of two kings: Phung Hung, who rose against the Tang governors in the 8th century, and Ngo Quyen, whose victory at Bach Dang in 938 ended a thousand years of northern rule. You stop at the temple of Phung Hung and the tomb of Ngo Quyen at the village edge.

Questions before you book
About the day
How long is the tour and when does it start?
It runs About 5.5 hours door to door, departing 07:45 or 13:15 from your hotel. In the hot months from May to September the morning start is the cooler choice.
Where do you pick us up?
At your own hotel, anywhere in central Hanoi, with no meeting point to reach on your own. Your guide waits in the lobby for 20 minutes.
How much walking is there?
About 3 km in all, on flat paved lanes, with short car hops between the far stops. There are no stairs to climb; the old brick paving is uneven in places, so wear flat shoes.
Can we change the route or the pace?
Yes. This is a sample day and every part of it can be adjusted: add a stop, skip one, or spend longer in the lanes. Tell us before you book and we confirm the plan and an all-inclusive price in writing.
Does the guide speak good English?
Yes. Your guide is a licensed local who speaks fluent English and explains the customs, the old houses and the story of each gate and shrine as you go.
Booking and practicalities
Is the price per person or for the whole group?
For the whole group, from one to four guests: four people pay less each than two, and the car is the same car. Children under 5 travel free and do not count towards the group size; from 5 a child counts as one guest. Groups of five or more travel in a larger vehicle — message us for a quote.
How do I pay, and when?
Two ways: pay the full price online by card, or pay a 30% deposit online and the rest in cash on the day of the tour, in US dollars or Vietnamese dong. We can also send a secure payment link on WhatsApp. The booking is confirmed once the online payment goes through, and your pickup time and guide’s name arrive in writing.
Can I cancel or reschedule?
Yes - free cancellation up to 3 days before departure for a full refund, and free rescheduling subject to availability. Within 3 days of departure, 30% of the tour price is charged because the car and guide are already committed. Date changes are arranged over WhatsApp.
What should I bring, and do I need cash?
Flat shoes, a hat, and clothes that cover shoulders and knees for the pagoda and shrines. You need no cash at any gate; if you chose to pay the balance in cash, bring it for your guide.
What happens if it rains?
The tour runs in light rain: the lanes are paved, the houses and pagodas are covered, and the laterite walls look their darkest and best when wet. In a storm or a typhoon warning we move your date or refund you in full.
