The old gate of Mong Phu, the heart of Duong Lam, still opens onto the square where the village met. Inside the communal house, rows of great wooden columns hold up a tiled roof carved with dragons and clouds, and your guide explains who was worshipped here and how the village ran its own affairs. Beside it is the old well the families drew water from for generations.
The laterite lanes and a 400-year-old house

The lanes branch off the main road like the bones of a fish, walled in rough rust-brown laterite laid without plaster. You step inside a wooden house close to four hundred years old where the family still lives; they sit you down for green tea and show you the ancestral altar. The old houses of Duong Lam are family homes, not museums. If a family is out on the day, your guide takes you into another house of the same age instead.

A family in one of the old houses cooks with you: spring rolls rolled by hand, a village pork dish, fresh greens and rice, then che lam with green tea. You eat together at their table in the main room. Tell us about allergies or a vegetarian diet when you book and the menu is changed.
Mia Pagoda and the shrines of the two kings

Mia Pagoda holds close to three hundred lacquered statues, and a few minutes away stand the shrines of Phung Hung and Ngo Quyen, the two kings born in Duong Lam. Your guide tells their story in the places it belongs to.

Thay Pagoda and its water pavilion

Thay Pagoda sits at the foot of Sai Son mountain, facing Long Tri pond. In the middle of the pond stands the water pavilion, tied to the monk Tu Dao Hanh, who by legend began water puppetry here, and two roofed bridges cross the water. Water puppets are performed at the Thay Pagoda water pavilion only during the pagoda festival in the third lunar month. On other days you see the pavilion and hear its story, not a show. If legs allow, a stone path climbs Sai Son behind the pagoda to caves and a view over the fields.

Questions before you book
About the day
How long is the tour and when does it start?
It runs About 9 hours door to door, departing 08:00 from your hotel and back in Hanoi around 17:00.
Where do you pick us up?
At your own hotel, anywhere in central Hanoi, with no meeting point to reach on your own. Your guide waits in the lobby for 20 minutes.
How much walking, and are there steps?
Duong Lam is flat and paved. At Thay Pagoda the halls stand on low stone platforms with a few steps, and the path up Sai Son behind it is steep and uneven — it is optional, and your guide skips it if anyone prefers.
Can we change the route or the pace?
Yes. This is a sample day and every part of it can be adjusted: add a stop, skip one, or spend longer in the village. Tell us before you book and we confirm the plan and an all-inclusive price in writing.
Does the guide speak good English?
Yes. Your guide is a licensed local who speaks fluent English and explains the customs, the old houses and the story of each gate and shrine as you go.
What should I bring, and do I need cash?
Flat shoes, a hat, and clothes that cover shoulders and knees for the pagodas and shrines. You need no cash at any gate; if you chose to pay the balance in cash, bring it for your guide.
Booking and practicalities
Is the price per person or for the whole group?
For the whole group, from one to four guests: four people pay less each than two, and the car is the same car. Children under 5 travel free and do not count towards the group size; from 5 a child counts as one guest. Groups of five or more travel in a larger vehicle — message us for a quote.
How do I pay, and when?
Two ways: pay the full price online by card, or pay a 30% deposit online and the rest in cash on the day of the tour, in US dollars or Vietnamese dong. We can also send a secure payment link on WhatsApp. The booking is confirmed once the online payment goes through, and your pickup time and guide’s name arrive in writing.
Can I cancel or reschedule?
Yes - free cancellation up to 3 days before departure for a full refund, and free rescheduling subject to availability. Within 3 days of departure, 30% of the tour price is charged because the car and guide are already committed. Date changes are arranged over WhatsApp.
What about food allergies or a vegetarian diet?
Tell us when you book. The family cooks a vegetarian version or leaves out anything you cannot eat. Che lam contains peanuts.
What happens if it rains?
The tour runs in light rain: the lanes are paved, the houses and pagodas are covered, and the laterite walls look their darkest and best when wet. In a storm or a typhoon warning we move your date or refund you in full.
